A Younger Dick 1970
Dick Nichol, the managing director of BVISpeed has been in business in the British Virgin Islands since 1977. Dick is one of the founders BVI Sailmakers (Doyle Sails), Wanderlust Yacht Vacations, Underwater Safaris (sold his interests in 1995), and most recently BVISpeed Marine & Industrial Supply. Dick is also one of the founders of the British Virgin Islands Charter Yacht Society, the largest charter yacht association in the Caribbean.
Prior to settling in the British Virgin Islands, Dick was a regional manager for the Bostitch Division of Textron in San Francisco before they were sold to Stanley Tools.
Going Back: While in high school Dick, worked for his father who managed a large industrial hardware supply in San Francisco. Like most teenage boys he became obsessed with cars in his early teens. He worked his way through college as an engine mechanic building racing engines for Bonneville lakesters, dragsters and street rods. He also pumped a lot of gas back when the personnel actually pumped the gas for you, checked the oil and water and even washed your windows. That was back in the days of Mickey Thompson and Don Garlits.
Recruited out of college as an engineer, Dick spent twelve years with Bostitch-Textron initially developing their pneumatic tool line and eventually moving on into sales and finally into management. In 1975 he took a two year sabbatical that has lasted for more than thirty five years. I forgot to mention that during the twelve years that Dick spent with Bostitch he and two partners were also building the now famous yacht Wanderlust* which was to take him on the 35 year sabbatical. Somewhere along the line he also managed to squeeze in a couple years of vacation courtesy of the U.S. Army.
The short of it is Dick has been using, designing and selling tools and machinery for over five decades and he has been building and sailing yachts almost as long. Lastly he was brought up to appreciate and possesses a good service ethnic. Talk about having experience to pass along.
Wanderlust* You'll have to ask Dick to elaborate on Wanderlust.
